LEGACY ON THE LAKE

Client: The Oaks
Project: Menu and Signage Rebrand

THE CHALLENGE

The Oaks, a staple of Chippewa Lake since the 1800s, offers fine dining, a picturesque venue, and scenery worthy of Architectural Digest. Its branding, however, hadn't evolved with its audience. The identity felt dated: overly traditional logos, mismatched copy, and a muted palette that clashed with modern wedding photography and marketing visuals. Without cohesion, vibrancy, or a clear tone, the brand struggled to reach younger visitors while honoring its heritage.

THE PROCESS

Conversations with the owner made the goal clear: preserve The Oaks' vintage charm while refreshing its appeal for a younger audience. I began with typography, selecting an open typeface subtly reminiscent of the branching structure of oak trees, and designed a new logo with oak leaves as a background motif for texture and depth. The palette kept the restaurant's original salmon tone and added a vibrant seafoam green for contrast, while layered graphic elements brought visual interest without overwhelming the design. The refreshed identity rolled out across menus, signage, and marketing collateral, with accessibility guiding every choice; menus, for example, were printed on off-white paper for readability among the restaurant's older clientele. To support sustainability and enhance the customer experience, I introduced QR code table cards for digital menus and event details, an update that aligned with The Oaks' "Keep Chippewa Lake Green" ethos. For larger events, bolder color schemes and layered treatments brought energy and cohesion to the brand experience.

THE RESULT

The rebrand was met with enthusiasm from the owner and community. The Oaks now has a visual identity that feels both rooted and renewed, celebrating its legacy while inviting in a new generation of guests. The QR codes were particularly well received, reinforcing the sustainability message while modernizing the dining experience. The refreshed look brought clarity, character, and vibrancy to every customer touchpoint, setting the stage for future growth.

LESSONS LEARNED

This project emphasized the importance of balancing heritage with evolution: thoughtful updates can honor a legacy while making space for new audiences. It also reinforced the value of listening closely, not just to client requests but to a brand's underlying spirit. Designing with accessibility and intention made all the difference.
